KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew has lauded Shell’s initiative in going for zero flaring in its operation.

Speaking at Shell Deepwater’s 40th anniversary on Wednesday night, Christina welcomed the decision as flaring is an unsustainable practice from a resource management and environmental perspective.

“It contributes to climate change and impacts the environment through emission of carbon dioxide, black carbon and other pollutants,” Christina said.

Christina, who is also the State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, pointed out that the vast coverage of forest areas in Sabah has provided fresh and clean air to its people.

In Malaysia, Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Ltd is the operator of Shell’s two deep-water assets, Gumusut-Kakap and Malikai.

Commissioned in 2014 and 2016 respectively, the two deep-water hubs located offshore Sabah are a marvel in their engineering designs; Gumusut-Kakap is a semi-submersible floating production system and Malikai is the country and the region’s first tension-leg platform.

“Both Gumusut-Kakap and Malikai contribute significantly to the nation’s oil and gas production.

“Advanced technologies and an innovative approach have proven essential to safety and reliably produces hydrocarbons from deep beneath the ocean,” Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Ltd general manager Prithipal Singh said.

Last year, Malikai was awarded the Institute of Engineers Malaysia’s (IEM) highest honour for its design and engineering.
