SIBU: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a 34-year-old man to three years’ jail and five strokes of the cane yesterday after finding him guilty of drug possession.
Magistrate Muhammad Faizal Che Saad handed down the decision on Lai Tze Kiong under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39A(1)(r) of the same Act.
The section provides for an imprisonment term of between two and five years, and between three and nine strokes of the cane.
The court also granted a stay of execution pending an appeal, and released Lai on a bail of RM5,000 with two local sureties while ordering him to report to the nearest police station on the first Monday of every month.
The offence took place on July 23, 2017 at about 10am at a house in Engkilo, when Lai was found in possession of 5.90 grammes of methamphetamine.
