Plantation worker claims trial to six counts of cheating

MIRI: A plantation worker pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to six counts of cheating.

Lawrence Maoh, 56, from Jalan Selirik in Kapit, was charged under Section 240 of the Penal Code for delivery of coin in the knowledge that it is counterfeit.

The offence carries a jail term of up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine, if convicted.

For the first three charges, Lawrence is accused of cheating a married couple, aged 58 and 53, and the husband’s 63-year-old brother-in-law of RM500 each.

The offence took place at 9am on Sep 29 in a hotel at Jalan Setia Raja here.

For the subsequent three charges, he is accused of cheating the same three persons out of RM3,000, RM600 and RM4,000, respectively.

The offence occurred at 1.30pm on Sept 30 at a ferry wharf in Bintulu market.

Earlier, prosecuting officer ASP Mary Ong applied for a new date to be set for case management as the accused claimed trial to all six charges.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa allowed the application and set Nov 19 for case management, and granted Lawrence bail of RM5,000 pending the date.
