KUCHING: The Sarawak government is serious about ensuring the rights of children so that their needs and development would be managed holistically.

According to Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, children have the rights for care and protection, as well as getting nutritious food for balanced development encompassing physical, emotional, socio-cultural and personal development aspects.

She adds that many initiatives have been undertaken by her ministry towards achieve this end – including setting up the Sarawak Early Childhood Development Council and also holding convention on preschools – all aimed at ensuring that Sarawakian children would obtain the best care and education for them to grow up into individuals with good personality and characters.

“In realising that the children have many different talents, the ministry is organising the first ‘Showcase Sarawak Kids Got Talent’ to unearth their hidden talents and honing them at preschool level.

“The event involves children, aged four to six, from registered preschools. It also includes public speaking, dancing and singing, the arts and other special talents,” she spoke during the launch of the showcase at Auditorium P Ramlee here yesterday.

It is learnt that the preliminary round of the programme ran from Sept 5 to 19 this year.

Adding on, Fatimah hailed the hard work and dedication of the participants, their parents and teachers which contributed to the smooth running of the showcase.

“The event is also in line with the goal of producing a new generation (of individuals) who are cultured and knowledgeable. It is also a good place for the children to grow in – an environment (that is) rich with culture, arts and harmony,” she added.
