SMK Lutong, SK Jalan Bintang are upcycling champs

MIRI: The A Team from  SMK Lutong and Star team from SK Jalan Bintang  emerged champions in the Upcycle Ocean Trash Competition 2018 for the secondary school and primary school categories respectively yesterday.

Star team took home RM500 cash, trophies and certificates.

The primary school category which only had two qualifying teams saw Mawar team from SR Sri Mawar in second spot winning RM300 cash, trophies and certificates.

In the secondary school category, The Legend from SMK Baru and The Queens from SMK Baru were second and third respectively.

The top three winners in the secondary school category received RM500, RM300 and RM200 respectively plus certificates.

There were two special awards offered in the competition namely  Special Mention Certificate for Environmental Sustainability Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Miri branch and RM200 cash; and public jury award on Facebook Popular Choice Award and RM300 cash.

SMK Luar Bandar Miri was selected as the winner for environmental sustainability award while SK Jalan Bintang took the popular choice award.

Miri City Council councillor Yap Siew Jin who represented the guest of honour Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin presented the prizes to winners at Coco Cabana.

The competition was jointly organised by Malaysian Nature Society Miri branch, Miri Local Agenda 21 (LA 21) of Miri City Council, Pustaka Miri, Coco Cabana Miri, Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) as well as three Junior Chamber International (JCI) Chapter for Miri, Riam and Lutong.

The competition themed ‘Wonders of Sarawak’ required students to build replicas of Sarawak landmarks from the trash collected at the beaches here.

Also present was organising chairman Iqbal Abdollah who is also MNS Miri chairman.
