MIRI: Penan Empowerment Network (PEN) chairwoman Elia Bit wants the relevant authority to take serious look into the need to build road bumps near schools area for the safety of students and those living nearby.

The accident where the two young girls died while to crossing the road in front of SK Long Lapok.

Her statement comes after two young girls died while crossing the main road in front of SK Long Lapok in Tinjar, Baram on Oct 16.

The deceased who were both Penan children from Long Lutin, Baram were struck by a vehicle which was travelling from Bakong towards Lapok.

“I have spoken in 2016, requesting the relevant authority for road bumps at SK Long Lapok area. Yet, they only provided zebra lines which are often overlooked by drivers. The road is not safe for children crossing and road bumps could help slow down the in-coming vehicles.

“When the unfortunate incident occurs, it is a harsh reminder to all relevant authorities and departments that such infrastructure must not be overlooked. It is time for them to take action to prevent anymore incident like this,” she said.

Elia also hopes that the authorities would build the road bumps as soon as possible, as they have been requesting it for a long time.
