Man arrested for illegal contraband and attempting to bribe officers

Illegal contraband of alcohol and cigarettes amounting to RM55,000 was seized by police officers on Tuesday.

MIRI: The 12th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) has arrested a 48-year-old man and seized liquors and cigarettes amounting RM55,000 during its Op Libas at a premises in Centre Point Commercial Center on Tuesday.

In a statement today, commanding officer Supt Tan Hiap Seng detailed that his personnel had also seized RM2,000 in cash which the suspect tried to give as monetary bribe to the officers on duty.

“A total of 156 boxes of cigarettes of various types, 77 bottles of liquors and 173 cans liquor amounting RM55,000 were found in the premises and inside a car which was parked in front of the premises.

“During the raid, the suspect tried to give monetary bribe amounting RM2,000 to the officers on duty. They advised him not to do so, but the suspect insisted which later led to the seizure of the RM2, 000 gratification,” Tan said.

The suspect is currently being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for failure to pay customs duties and Section 17 (b) Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 for giving bribery.
