KUCHING: While the public focus is on a man shown in a video recording being beaten up by his father-in-law here recently, the police and other relevant authorities must not overlook allegations of the man abusing his wife which was believed to have led to the assault.

Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing in a statement released yesterday said the police while investigating the assault case must also investigate the alleged domestic violence committed by the man against his wife which led to her father taking the law into his own hands.

He said the police should investigate allegations posted in the social media that the man had assaulted his wife so badly she had to be admitted to hospital.

If those accusations were false then the investigation would clear his name and also help the police in pursuing the assault by his father-in-law which was recorded in the video.

“I do not encourage using violence to solve problems but if the allegations of abuse by the man against his wife were true then the father-in-law has mitigating reasons to resort to violence and I can understand why the man was driven to beating up his son-in-law,” Tiong said

He added that domestic violence especially in cases of men against their wife must not be tolerated by the society.
