Sarawakian making her mark with national squad at Asia Rugby 7s

KUCHING: Malaysia have qualified for the Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens Series 2019 following their victory in the recent Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens Trophy at Panaga Club, Kuala Belait in Brunei.

Making Miri and Sarawak proud was sole representative from the state Stancy Ling Engan who contributed to Malaysia’s success in lifting the Cup.

In the preliminary group matches, Malaysia lost 12-17 to Guam in the opener but bounced back strongly to whitewash Laos, Indonesia and Brunei 22-0, 29-0 and 48-0 respectively to beat Uzbekistan 5-0 in the Cup semi-finals.

They went on to edge Philippines 10-7 in the final.

Guam finished third after they beat Uzbekistan in the play-off while India took the Plate after beating Laos.

Those finishing in seventh to 10th positions were Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and Brunei.

“This is another good achievement by the state women players especially from Miri.

“I must congratulate Miri especially the coaches Landale Cranfield and Sylvia Alexander Lian for the good work they have done for the development of women’s rugby in Miri Division,” said Sarawak Rugby Union president Richard Song Swee Jin.

He also extended his appreciation to Miri Division Rugby Association president Antonio Kahti Galis and coach Faqrul Hafiz Abu Bakar.
