KUCHING: The 48-year-old contractor who beat up his former son-in-law for injuring his wife has been released on police bail in one surety.

Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar granted the release of the suspect, as the police have to get further instruction from the public prosecutor.

According to the suspect’s lawyer Lim Lian Kee, the victim did not lodge a police report but because a video of his client seen beating his former son-in-law with a cane has gone viral in the social media and in countries outside Malaysia, the Bukit Aman police instructed the local police to take action.

A Taiwanese TV station even carried a news over the video, Lim said.

The contractor’s daughter was said to be warded in the ICU and this angered him more. This prompted him to take the law into his own hand.

The victim and ex wife – a beauty product saleswoman – have a daughter.
