Remand extended for babysitter who allegedly abused child

KUCHING: A babysitter suspected of abusing a 14-month-old toddler by under nourishing her following the late payment of fees by the child’s mother, has been placed on another four days remand order for the police to complete investigation into the allegation.

The first remand order expired today.

The suspect was arrested four days ago for the suspicion of abusing the baby girl and after the unconscious child was brought to Sarawak General Hospital for treatment on Oct 25.

According to the police, the toddler was in critical condition when she was brought to the hospital.

A medical examination revealed she had not been adequately fed for almost three weeks, which caused her to suffer from seizures and bacterial infection in her lungs.

On top of that, there were also bruises on the child’s head enough to suggest the she had been beaten up with an object.

It is understood that due to the mother’s work commitments, the child had been placed under the babysitter’s care for the past three weeks, from 8am to 10.30pm daily.

The last time the mother met her child was on Oct 23.
