KUCHING: Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom has dismissed speculations that his recent group trip to London was to acquire some official documents from the capital city of England.

Met by journalists here today, he confirmed that he had recently, with some other state assembly persons, visited London but the trip had nothing to do with ‘Sarawak Exit’.

According to him, they visited the Parliament there as part of the study trip so as “to familiarise all the YBs (elected representatives) with the running of the government”.

“Also the constitutional set up, how the Parliament works and that they (London and England) have the national Parliament while Scotland and Wales have their own devolved parliaments.

“Like the city of London, they have mayor elected by the people of London. Then they set up the London assembly where they can control and it is elected by the people. It is very democratic,” he said after attending a meeting at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters off Jalan Bako here.

Mawan added that they had learnt a lot about how to empower the people from the trip alone.

He reiterated that the study tour “is not relevant to Sarawak Exit” when a reporter pressed for further information.

“We went to England to study. There were not many, only 10 of us on the trip. I am a retiree, but I’m just learning. It is good for the YBs as they will learn something,” he said.

He added that: “So no, there are no documents.”

He was prompted for comments following a recent Facebook post which carried a photo of him posing with other state assembly persons during the visit to London.
