Woman gets 20 years for house sale con

KUCHING: A 35-year-old woman has been sentenced to a total of 20 years imprisonment for cheating another woman in a house for sale con job.

The jail sentence took effect from yesterday after Sim Ling Ling pleaded guilty to six charges of cheating before the Magistrates courts here.

However, the accused from Jalan Stampin Tengah, may only be serving time for 11 years as three out of the six jail terms are to run concurrently.

Sim was also fined a total of RM15,000 but in default of settlement, she would have to serve another three years in jail.

She committed the six offences between May 23 and July 5 2017 at several places – inside a car parked outside banks and at an MBKS parking fee payment counter here.

Sim deceived the 41-year-old complainant to part with a total of RM70,800 supposedly for the house price, legal fees, a land title fee and other related costs.

Cheating is an offence punishable under Section 420 of the Penal Code upon conviction.

In an unrelated case yesterday, a 16-year-old youth was sent to the Boys Home Tunas Bakti following the tender in a Magistrates Court by the Welfare Department, a probation report on him.

On Oct 16 the youth pleaded guilty to committing statutory rape on a 14-year-old woman on Sept 15 2018 at a house in a village here.

According to the police, the young woman did not consent to the sexual encounter and even if she had, she was still a minor. The offence was committed during the day time.

The mother of the complainant lodged a police report after finding out that her daughter was five weeks pregnant and this was confirmed by the public hospital at Jalan Puncak Borneo in Padawan.

The offence is punishable under Section 371 (1) of the Penal Code upon conviction.
