International, local jazz musicians to give concert

SIBU: International musician Julian Moreen along with local Sibu musicians Andrew Cheng, Eugene Seow and Liu ‘Jack’ Yujia are jazzing up with a concert tonight at RH Hotel.

Starting at 7pm with cocktail reception from 6.30pm, the concert is jointly organised by Thomas Music Studio (TMS) and RH Hotel to promote and share jazz music, according to TMS owner Thomas Ling

“We also want to showcase local talents, particularly Andrew,” he said.

Julian Moreen is a pianist, singer and songwriter influenced by jazz and world music who grew up in Germany but lives in New York. He has won several piano competitions in Germany and a recipient of Berklee Songwriting Award who has toured Germany, Switzerland, France, Slovakia, Taiwan and the East Coast of the United States.

Andrew Cheng is a Sibu-born guitarist who began with classical guitar at the age 14 and went on to earn a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is presently based in New York.

Eugene Seow is an award-winning drummer, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Singapore who is also a graduate of Berklee College of Music and Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. He has performed with celebrated jazz musicians including Terence Blanchard, Dr Lonnie Smith and Cecile Mclorin Savant at some of New York’s most high profile venues, including the world famous Lincoln Center.

Liu ‘Jack’ Yujia is a bassist from Tainan, Taiwan who studied classical double bass at Tainan University of the Arts and is currently in master’s programme focusing on jazz performance.
