KOTA TINGGI: The Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources is in the process of studying the National Water Resources Bill in efforts to strengthen water resources management.

Its minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar said the bill should be ready to be tabled in Parliament by next year.

“We are confident that it could be implemented. In fact the state will have to agree to the bill.

“There must be uniformity of legislation in relation to water resources management and infrastructure provision in safeguarding and maintaining water resources,” he told reporters after opening the Johor River Barrage here yesterday.

Jayakumar said though the state government has the right to disagree on the bill, existing guidelines should be adopted in the management of water resources in the state.

Meanwhile, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian said he was for the bill as long as it would benefit the people. — Bernama
