KUCHING: SK St Teresa, a primary school in Serian will be gradually closed in the next five years due to unsafe conditions of the school buildings.

This was informed by John Ilus (PBB – Bukit Simuja) when debating the Supply Bill (2019) at the State Legislative Assembly yesterday.

“I was told that the chairman and board of management of SK St. Teresa had written to the Director of Education, Sarawak, through his letter dated on the 30th June 2018, that by next year (2019) the intake or admission for Primary 1 classes will be stopped due to unsafe conditions of the school buildings which has been reported several times by the relevant authority.

“So, gradually in the next 5 years, the school will be closed,” he said.

As such, he queried the progress and development of SK Sri Sadong which is suppose to be the long-term solution to cater for the pupils from SK St Teresa.

He also questioned what short-term remedial will the Education Department take in order to place the new students that are supposed to enter Year 1 there.

On another matter, he hoped the much awaited Grade 3 Polyclinic for Serian can be implemented as soon as possible.

He said the present Serian hospital would be crammed as early as 6 am everyday at the service counter with patients young and old waiting to seek medical treatment.

“The same thing also happens at the pharmacy counter. So please, speed up the polyclinic project,” he said.

He also proposed few projects for the constituency, including Tebakang Old Town Waterfront Project.

He explained Tebakang, located at the bank of Batang Sadong, is one of the oldest bazaars in Serian and popular for its freshwater prawns.
