Youth claims trial to armed robbery, drug charges

KUCHING: A 24-year-old youth claimed trial to charges of armed robbery and possessing a deadly weapon – a machette.

Kelvin Kho Ngiap Chuon from Kpg Segedup in Batu Kawah pleaded not guilty before a magistrates’ court yesterday, which fixed the next trial date to Feb 20 next year.

Kho allegedly robbed two women at knife point of their personal belonging including cash, identity card, handphone, car key, bank account book, ATM card and a sling bag near a supermarket in Jalan Penrissen here on Sept 27.

He allegedly used a machette in the robbery.

Armed robbery under Sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code carries a maximum penalty of 14 years’ jail and also whipping and a fine upon conviction.

Possessing dangerous weapon under Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive weapons Act 1958 carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ jail and also whipping upon conviction.

In an unrelated case, a 25-year-old youth pleaded not guilty to possessing 21.6 grammes of cannabis at a magistrates’ court here, which fixed Dec 24 for further hearing.

Ezzwan Yuswan Jemat allegedly possessed the item (ganja) at 5.40pm on Aug 2 by the roadside at a housing estate in Jalan Tabuan. Drug possession under Sections 6 and 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 carries a maximum jail term of five years and nine strokes of whipping upon conviction.
