SIBU: It was business as usual at Sibu Express Boat Terminal yesterday despite an express boat catching fire early in the morning.

Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi said the incident did not cause any disruption to the usual boat schedule, which saw 14 trips for the Sibu-Kapit sector and one for Sibu-Kuching.

“The razed express boat as well as the slightly damaged one serviced the Sibu-Igan as well as Sibu-Daro sector. Today’s (yesterday) incident, however, did not affect the scheduling,” he said.

On another matter, Hatta said SRB is prepared for the expected surge in passenger volume in view of the coming school holiday.

“We will conduct a special operation from Nov 22 till 24. The objective is to ensure safety for all, and that includes preventing overloading; ensuring availability of safety equipment as well as ensuring that ‘juragans’ (skippers) are qualified,” he added.
