SIBU: The Sarawak government has placed great emphasis on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to produce the much-needed human capital to support the state’s development initiatives.

Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur and Small Medium Enterprise (SME) Development Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais said this when he declared open a seminar ‘A Catalyst for Sarawak’s Industrial and Entrepreneurial Development’ at RH Hotel here yesterday.

He said to support the government’s transformation into digital economy, industry players had to equip their workforce with knowledge and skills in line with the current and future needs of the various industrial sectors.

“In this respect, I am pleased to note that the Sarawak Skills Development Centre (PPKS) is offering a wide range of industry-relevant programmes comprising both academic and TVET programmes. I also understand that PPKS plans to set up a dedicated Industry 4.0 Lab and a Metallurgy and Materials Science Training Centre in the near future.

“As a registered training provider with the Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF), PPKS is committed in its quest to produce a highly skillful and competent workforce for the industries in Sarawak by designing, developing and delivering training programmes in both technical and soft skill areas.

“I understand that as a Centre of Excellence in Technology (CoET), PPKS conducts the National Empowerment in Certification and Training for Next Generation Workers (NECT-Gen-Industry 4.0) programmes for HRDF levy-contributing companies.

“The following tracks are offered: Big Data, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, Internet of Things (IoT) and Vertical Integration,” he said.

He added that with PPKS, working adults are be able to earn industry-relevant qualifications via Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) assessment and recognition.

On the seminar, he said it was timely and reflected Sarawak government’s ongoing initiatives to boost economic development throughout the state.

“Indeed, today’s seminar is a commendable initiative co-organised by Sarawak Multimedia Authority, Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MIED), and PPKS as an important step in our government’s strategic move to transform Sarawak into a Digital Economy Powerhouse,” he added.

PPKS management council’s secretary Dato Maznah Dasmi, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development Datu Liaw Soon Eng, PPKS executive director Hallman Sabri and Sibu Resident Charles Siaw were among those present.
