Sarawak Museum Complex set to be icon for Kuching City – Abdul Karim

KUCHING: The new Sarawak Museum Complex will be an icon for Kuching City, which will attract domestic and international tourists.

In stating this, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the complex which is expected to be completed by middle of next year will be open to the public by the end of 2020.

“The state government has allocated about RM308 million to construct the new Sarawak Museum Complex, which will become a new icon for Kuching City,” he said in his text of speech which was read by Sarawak Museum director Ipoi Datan at the 8th Asia-Europe Museum Network (Asemus) dinner here on Wednesday.

Abdul Karim added that collections in Sarawak Museum stretch way back to as early as the 1880s and the museum is the oldest in Borneo and famous for its original history and ethnography collections at their finest.

With regard to the Asemus conference in Kuching, he said it is very special to Sarawak because it gives Sarawak the opportunity to host such a prestigious event.

He said events such as this gather international speakers and participants to share and exchange knowledge and experiences.

“We welcome all participants and we ask that you visit all the interesting places in Kuching City, try our local food like laksa Sarawak, kolok mee and layered cakes and many more.

“Sarawak has more than 20 ethnic groups that live harmoniously and peacefully with each other,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Asemus Conference which started on November 14 and ends today is participated by more than 17 countries.
