APM personnel remove the carcass from Miri Esplanade beach.

MIRI:  The remains of an Irrawaddy dolphin were discovered at Miri Esplanade this morning.

Civil Defence Force (APM) Miri officer Capt (PA) Mohd Hazle Shah Abdul Hamid said they received a call on the discovery by a group of civilians who were cleaning up the beach around 10.22am.

A team of eight APM personnel led by PS13 (PA) Alwie Mumin went to the location at 10.29am.

“Members found a dolphin carcass and immediately informed the Malaysian Nature Society for further action.

“A representative of Malaysian Nature Society Iqbal Abdollah arrived at the scene around 11.29am and monitored the condition of the dolphin carcass and recorded necessary information,” he said.

It is learnt that the female Irrawaddy dolphin measured about six-feet in length and weighs at estimated 80 to 100 kilo grammes.

“It is believed that the dolphin had died elsewhere and washed ashore during high tide. There were marks around the fins that indicate that it had earlier been caught in a net,” he added.

The case has been handed over to Sarawak Forestry Corporation for further investigation.

When contacted, a representative from SFC said the cause of death of the dolphin has not been ascertained.
