Lee: Tender for flood mitigation projects out by Dec 15

MIRI: Two flood mitigation projects here costing about RM25 million and fully funded by the Sarawak government will be tendered out by Dec 15.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the projects would address the flood woes that frequently affected residents at Eco Park and Taman Tunku.

“After being briefed on the flood issues at Eco Park and Taman Tunku, the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had approved RM15 million for the implementation of flood mitigation project for Eco Park and another RM10 million for Taman Tunku.

“With the budget  available, there is a need for us to speed up the implementation of the project in our effort to end the flood woes in the affected areas,” he stated at a media conference after chairing a briefing session on Flood Mitigation Projects for Eco Park and Taman Tunku at Miri City Council (MCC) chamber meeting room yesterday.

Lee who is also Senadin assemblyman said the project consultant has been given two weeks to prepare the final detail of the project design.

For Eco Park, he explained the construction of the project will involve construction of a storm drain diversion.

“The width of the storm drain diversion is between 4.5 metres to 6 metres and over 2 kilometres long.

“The construction of the flood mitigation project for Eco Park will involve some public utility services as well as acquisition of land along the project areas,” he said.

The other project for Taman Tunku would involve deepening, widening, strengthening of Sungai Dalam as well as improving the two detention ponds in the areas.

Both of the projects would be completed within 15 months.

Meanwhile, Lee reminded the MCC to improve the drainage system at Taman Tunku.

Also present were Miri mayor Adam Yii, DID Sarawak director Chok Moi Soon, chairman of MCC’s standing committee for city infrastructure Cr Abdullah Jaini and chairman of MCC’s standing committee for building control Cr Peter Chia.
