KUALA LUMPUR: The government said yesterday it has no objection to the organisation of gatherings to protest against the proposed ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) so long as the organisers abide by the conditions of assembly.

Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the gatherings, involving PAS and Umno members, can be organised so long as the provisions of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 are adhered to.

“There is no problem if they comply with the rules under the Act and meet all the conditions. But they have to follow the rules. I advise them not to make any provocative statements. We have laws; I hope they abide by them,” he said to reporters at the Parliament lobby.

Muhyiddin was asked whether the two parties have provided the notification to the police to hold the gathering on Dec 8.

According to the Peaceful Assembly Act, organisers are only required to notify or inform the officer in charge of the police district of an intended assembly. Under the Act, the police have no authority to refuse the assembly.

On another matter, Muhyiddin said the government is looking at the terms of the agreement and services of a company operating the Electronic Travel Registration & Information (eNTRI) facility which has been linked to alleged irregularities.

“If we find that it (the service) is no longer appropriate due to what may have happened, we will terminate the facility,” he said. — Bernama
