MIRI: Suzie & Mark reigned supreme among the contestants battling it out with acoustic performances in the final of the Borneo Acoustic Got Talent 2018 competition held at Container City here recently.

The Sandakan pair belted out Blu Cantrell’s ‘Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)’ and Elle King’s ‘Ex’s & Oh’s’ accompanied with acoustic guitar, and bagged themselves RM3,000, a guitar and a recording contract. The first runner-up was Corn Beef from Miri, while another Sabahan ensemble, Acoustic Friends from Kota Kinabalu, placed third. They received cash prizes of RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively, along with other sponsored prizes.

Also competing were Zuden Karem from Brunei, The Gclefs (Brunei), The 2 Stooges (Miri), RozGyna & William (Miri), Syafiq (Brunei), Soul Brother (Miri) and Depo Brother (Kuching).

The contestants were required to deliver two songs during a 10-minute on-stage performance.

They were judged based on their vocal tone quality, precise pitch/tone/tempo and phrase, pronunciation, vocal dynamic, balance and harmony as well as music accompaniment, sound and dynamic balance, tempo and uniformity, presentation and creativity, as well as skills and clothing by a panel of judges comprising experienced and qualified professionals from the music and entertainment industry from Malaysia and Brunei.

The inaugural competition organised by Muda Moody Bcoustic aimed at showcasing local and outside talents as well as to create exposure for up-and-coming talents, styles as well as acoustic instruments.

During the event, the audience was also entertained by energetic performances from renowned local acoustic group Papaheroku and popular Malaysian singer and songwriter Aizat Amdan.

The competition was officiated by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who commended the organiser for staging the event which had gathered not only local but also foreign participants.

“Such competitions help Miri to move further into becoming a vibrant resort city.

“There is a need to offer various tourism attractions for both day and night times in Miri,” he said, while urging local stakeholders, particularly those from the hospitality industry business, to come together and organise more events including those that incorporate music, culture, sports and recreation.

Sandakan pair Suzie & Mark’s acoustic rendition of Blu Cantrell’s ‘Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)’ and Elle King’s ‘Ex’s & Oh’s’ won them the top prize.
