MIRI: A strong family institution played an important role in contributing to the community wellbeing as broken families would only lead to members in the family particularly youths exposed to unhealthy activities such as various social ills.

Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus said this when speaking during the Pre-Christmas Open House at Batu Niah Community Hall near here on Friday.

Rosey who is also Bekenu assemblywoman also called on the people to strengthen  family institution as she expressed her concern with the increase in divorce rate in the country including in Sarawak.

“All religions teach us to stay united and not split. I believe with strong religious foundation, it will help to ensure the family institution will grow stronger and this in turn would contribute positively to the development of community wellbeing,” she added.

Thus, she wanted those at community level to emphasise the importance of a strong family institution as it is one of the pillars in society.

Later at the same function, Rosey announced a RM15,000 grant under the Minor Rural Project (MRP) allocation to five Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) churches in Bekenu constituency namely BEM Ulu Niah, BEM Rumah Changgai, BEM Batu Niah, BEM Sinar Baru and BEM Saeh.

Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni topped up the grant with similar amount for the five churches.
