BINTULU: Government-linked companies (GLCs) and those from the private sector are encouraged to donate more books to schools and students in rural areas as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said studies have shown that children who have books at home will be more successful in their studies and career, compared with those who do not have a ‘mini library’ at home.

“I believe that books build dreams within the children’s heart.

“I have told Petronas and the Pan Borneo company that if they have CSR projects, don’t forget to give books apart from other stationery items,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Maszlee, who attended a meeting with Petronas and KKB-WCT Joint Venture Sdn Bhd at Bintulu Education Office, said the two entities also promised to help two schools – SK Sungai Selad and SK Sungai Setiam which he visited on Saturday – under their CSR initiative.

“We also hope more GLCs and private sectors would come forward to help the people to develop the education infrastructure under a private-public partnership and give their profits back to the people.”

In this regard, the minister said more meetings would be conducted with large companies operating in Sarawak to carry out more CSR projects that would benefit the people, especially the children.
