KUCHING: A construction worker was sentenced yesterday to a total of 44 years’ jail over the attempted rape and sexual assault of his 13-year-old niece early this year.
The 33-year-old pleaded guilty under Section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, read together with Section 511 of the same Code.
He committed the offences at a workers’ quarters at Jalan P Ramlee here in February.
Sessions Court judge Jason Juga sentenced the accused to 10 years’ imprisonment on one count of sexual assault, and 17 years’ jail each on two counts of attempted rape, as well as 22 strokes of the cane.
The jail sentences were ordered to run concurrently, meaning the accused will only serve 17 years in prison.
DPP Azahari Yusof prosecuted while the accused was represented by a legal counsel from the Sarawak Legal Aid Department.
In an unrelated case, a man was sentenced to three years in jail for assaulting his younger brother using a deadly weapon.
Zainal Abidin Omar pleaded guilty under Section 326A of the Penal Code to causing hurt to his 27-year-old brother at a house in Lorong Pinang Jawa, Petra Jaya here at 8.40pm on March 15 this year.
Sessions Court Judge Mohd Taufik Mohd Yusof presided over the case while DPP Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali prosecuted.
