SIBU: Relevant authorities are now on high alert, ready to render assistance should floods hit the Tamin area.

In giving this assurance, Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira also observed that the water level in areas across Batang Oya and Batang Mukah reached the ‘Alert’ mark yesterday morning, following incessant rain over the past few days.

“I have been informed that the Resident’s Office, the District Office together with the relevant agencies are on high-level alert and prepared to extend their assistance to flood victims – if needed.

“I have also been informed that operations room in Selangau has been activated to monitor the flood situation,” he said when contacted yesterday, adding that the evacuation centres there could be activated at any time should the need arise.

“Therefore, I advise the local folk to contact the operations room immediately if they notice that the water level in the area has risen up to the alert level.”

It is learnt that there is no report of any longhouse in Tamin being inundated.

Last week, Sibu Resident Charles Siaw said a total of 52 flood evacuation centres had been identified in Sibu Division and these could be activated at any time should the need arise.

Sibu has 25 centres, Kanowit has 17 and Selangau, 10.

In February this year, Selangau was hit by floods which displced more than 1,000 people from their homes.

The hardest hit area were Nanga Tajam, Batang Mukah and Ulu Arip, with longhouses inundated and road access cut off.
