KUCHING: The public is urged to be more aware and be mindful of what they eat to prevent health issues that require lifelong treatment like dialysis.

STEC Kidney Foundation president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, in making the call, said renal kidney failure arose due to other illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure.

“We need to educate the public on this so that they don’t get renal kidney failure. Once you get it, you can’t say you don’t want to do dialysis treatment. It is not something you want, so watch what you are eating,” he said when presenting STEC Kidney Foundation grants here yesterday.

Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Local Government and Housing, added that the number of (kidney) patients was increasing, thus the foundation is going all out to create awareness on the dangers of kidney disease, and encourage the people to live a healthy lifestyle.

The foundation presented grants to 15 patients undergoing dialysis at various centres in Sarawak; at CHKMUS MAA Medicare Kidney Charity Dialysis Centre (5 patients), NKF-KAS-Rotary Centre (1), Sibu Kidney Foundation (2) and MRC Dialysis Centre Miri (7).

At the event, Natural Avenue Sdn Bhd also presented their annual donation to the foundation. This year it gave RM300,000, which was presented by a company representative Sim Kiang Cheok and senior manager (Admin and Personnel) Lincoln Leong.

The foundation’s vice president John Ko Wai Seng was also present at the event.
