Jewellery shop bombed in failed robbery attempt

KOTA KINABALU: A gold and jewellery shop in Segama here was the target of a bomb explosion in a believed robbery attempt early this morning.

In the 2.30am incident, police believed the suspect, who remains at large, attempted to rob the shop but did not manage to take anything as there was no time.

Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief ACP Habibi Majinji said a call was placed to the police station at 2.45am, notifying them of the explosion. Upon arriving at the scene, it was found that a ground floor shop had been bombed.

“The bomb disposal unit was brought in to assess the situation and found explosion effects on the side gratings of the shop, resulting in damage to the grating as well as the shop interior and some of the jewellery.

“We have yet to identify the type of explosion used or how many were used, but we confirm there was only one explosion,” he told reporters at the scene of the crime.

He added that the owner of the shop was currently out of the State and would be contacted for a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and the Explosives Act 1957.
