SIBU: A manager of a ‘tahfiz’ (religious school) is now on remand in connection with investigation into threats made via Facebook against four elected people’s representatives (YBs) from the Democratic Action Party (DAP).

The magistrate’s court here yesterday ordered the suspect to undergo remand for three days to facilitate the investigations run under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 507 of the Penal Code.

The suspect, said to be in his 40s and is a member of Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) here, was arrested at 11am on Thursday – following a police report lodged by Maria Jonnit, an assistant of Lanang MP Alice Lau, on Wednesday afternoon.

The complainant was browsing through Facebook when she saw a statement said to have been posted by the suspect.

The statement reads: “Empat Orang YB DAP Sibu Berkemungkinan sudah mati menjelang musim baru persekolahan 2019. Doakan mereka benar benar mati jika benar mereka tidak kelihatan’ (Four YBs from DAP Sibu are likely to be dead upon the school reopening in 2019. Pray that they are dead if they are nowhere to be seen).”

Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit suggested that the suspect had made such a statement because he wanted voters to realise that the result of the 14th general election (GE14) last year was ‘a wrong decision’.

“The man claimed that the four YBs, who are now representing the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-led federal government, should not have any problem in receiving funds to enable their voters to organise their activities.

“He (suspect) also claimed that they (YBs) did not make any effort in giving their best services since they won the elections,” said Stanley, adding that the suspect also wanted the four YBs to meet the people more often.

“It is believed that the suspect had uploaded such statement on Facebook to remind the four YBs about their roles and responsibilities as people’s representatives,” said Stanley.
