UTM centre combines therapy, training, education for special needs children

JOHOR BAHRU: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has opened the first Little Genius Therapy Centre equipped with multi sensory smart room as well as various activities and training for children with special needs.

UTM School of Education Community Development and Education (CDE) research group and senior lecturer, Dr Dayana Farzeeha Ali said 250 families from all over Johor including UTM staff have registered with the therapy centre which began operation yesterday.

She said Little Genius was developed under UTM Endowment Unit and is managed by a group of researchers from CDE and Penawar Special Learning Centre (PSLC).

“We are the only education institution which combines elements of therapy, education, awareness and training at the therapy centre.

“Apart from the sensor room to stimulate the mind, we also provide training programmes at the centre to assist parents and teachers in handling their special needs children especially those with autism at home or in school,” she told reporters at the opening of the therapy centre here yesterday. — Bernama
