Bountiful harvest is expected to lower the prices of mandarin oranges by about 30 per cent this year.

KOTA KINABALU: Mandarin oranges are expected to be cheaper this year due to bountiful harvest.

Lo Fook Yu, owner of Lo Siew Lin Sdn Bhd, an importer of fresh fruits, vegetables and foodstuffs, said prices of mandarin oranges of size L and XL would decrease by 30 per cent compared to the year before.

Meanwhile, he said size S and M mandarin oranges would be 10 to 15 per cent cheaper this year.

Lo said he had started selling mandarin oranges about two weeks ago in a variety of gift packaging.

On another note, he said sales may drop slightly compared to last year as it has become less popular to give away mandarin oranges to clients nowadays.

“In the past, it was quite common to present mandarin oranges as gifts to customers during Chinese New Year.

“Now consumers usually buy mandarin oranges for their family and relatives only,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Nonetheless, Lo said it was premature to predict sales as the cheaper prices might encourage consumers to buy more mandarin oranges.
