Drug suspect escapes from police custody

SANDAKAN: A 29-year-old Indonesian drug suspect who was detained has escaped while entering a police truck from Sandakan Court, Mile 7 here on Thursday at around 3.40pm.

The suspect, Jusman Bin Amir, managed to open his metal handcuff (chain) and sprinted towards the bushes near Taman Khong Lok, mile 7 here.

According to Sandakan district Deputy Police Chief, Superintendent Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek, the suspect was detained under Beluran Headquarters Police Station.

Jusman was about to be sent to the Sibuga Prison here, after the mentioning of his case under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 at a Magistrate’s Court here. The court has ordered the suspect to be detained in Sandakan Prison under Section 259 of the Criminal Procedure Code while waiting for the case to be re-mentioned.

“The suspect has a thin physique, dark skin, and has a moustache and short beard. He was wearing a black shirt with ‘Sex Pistol’ written and white short pants when he escaped. The suspect is a Bugis and has a tattoo on his left arm.

“The operation to locate and arrest the suspect was initiated immediately by Sandakan Headquarters Police Station with personnel from Crime Investigation Department and ‘Tugas Am’ as well as K9.

“The suspect is still at large until now (8.30pm yesterday), and Ops Tutup 24 Jam is also initiated immediately to locate the suspect,” Abdul Fuad said.

He urged members of the public with information on the suspect to immediately contact the police at 089-212 222.

The case is investigated under Section 223 / 224 of the Penal Code which states a public servant has negligently allowed one to escape from detention or lawful arrest.
