SIBU: Three projects with a total cost of about RM3.6 million will be implemented in Nangka state constituency this year, said Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapaee.

These projects would comprise improvement works to the drainage in Kampung Nangka and Kampung Datu Baru and erecting a roof over the futsal court in Kampung Nangka.

“The drainage project for Kampung Nangka costs RM2.3 million and covers the whole stretch of earth drain there. The drains will be covered to become a walkway for the public. This will definitely benefit the people and ensure their safety as they no longer need to walk along the roadside.

“That aside, it will allow water to be drained out easily, preventing stagnant water to collect,” he told reporters here today after a briefing session with Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), which was also attended by council deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain and engineer Abdul Rahman.

Dr Annuar, who is also Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health revealed that the funding is from Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris) as part of road improvement works.

On the drainage project costing about RM1 million at Kampung Datu Baru, he pointed out that the poor drainage conditions necessitated the improvement works.

The poor conditions of the drainage stemmed from soil erosion and have affected the fencing of some of the houses there.

The Nangka assemblyman said the state government has set aside RM1 million through SMC for the improvement works.

On the roofing project, he said RM300,000 has been allocated from the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) project.

“The approval (for the project) comes with a condition – once all (the documentations) have been submitted and approved, a roof will be constructed over the futsal court in Kampung Nangka.”

On the drainage projects, he hoped that SMC will implement it portion by portion to avoid obstructing traffic flow and causing inconvenience to the public.

“I hope these projects will commence before March this year,” Dr Annuar said.
