All tourism facilities in Miri to be upgraded – Abg Johari

MIRI: The Sarawak government will ensure that all tourism-based facilities here are upgraded as part of its commitment of making Miri a truly vibrant ‘Resort City’.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said this would also ensure that the people here would benefit from the tourism industry.

Speaking to the media after visiting the ‘Wireless Walk’ project site at Jalan North Yu Seng here yesterday, Abang Johari said it is vital to upgrade tourism facilities in the city in order to meet the expectations of tourists looking for first-class facility and services.

“The tourism corridor, known as Wireless Walk, was actually initiated even before I was the Minister of Tourism.

“As an effort to facilitate tourists in Miri, we are now upgrading the tourism corridor with the necessary facilities because we want to make sure the people in Miri would benefit from our tourism promotion.”

On another tourism development, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government would set up its trade office in Brunei, set to serve as the liaison for Sarawak government in Brunei.

“This is part of the bilateral cooperation between Brunei and Sarawak. We are now working together with Royal Brunei Airline (RBA) because we have the understanding with RBA.

“RBA has now become one of our feeder airlines to bring more tourists to Sarawak.”

Commenting further on the RM3.3-million Wireless Walk project, Abang Johari said the progress of upgrading works on the 500m tourism corridor is now 70 per cent, and is expected to be reach completion by end of February this year.

Once ready, the corridor should accommodate 62 stalls and five food trucks selling food and drinks as well as handicraft products, and with a container concept, all kiosks would be provided with high-speed Internet connection and other necessary facilities.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Minister in Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus, Miri Resident Mastapha Julaihi and Miri Mayor Adam Yii were also present during the inspection.
