Fire in Pulau Bangi leaves 300 villagers homeless

KOTA KINABALU: More than 300 people in Kampung Karakit on Pulau Bangi in Kudat lost their homes to a fire yesterday afternoon.

According to the state Fire and Rescue Services’ operation room, 81 houses built above the water and on land on the island were gutted by the fire which broke out about 3pm.

Also destroyed were two units of teachers’ quarters and a Toyota Vigo.

Firemen from the Kudat fire station had to travel by the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency’s boat to the island located 40km from the mainland. By the time they arrived there, the fire was out and all that was left were the embers of the houses destroyed.

The firemen then made sure that there was no danger of the fire reigniting.

The victims are now temporarily housed at Sekolah Kebangsaan Karakit, Sekolah Agama Negeri Karakit and the district office’s resthouse.

No loss of lives or injuries were reported in the incident.
