SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) will allow local farmers to sell their produce from 9pm until 5am daily, outside Sandakan Central Market here.

Its president, Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik, said the move was one of the government’s efforts to promote the economy of the local community.

He said this after an inspection on farmers who were selling their produce outside the Sandakan Central Market here, around 2am yesterday.

The inspection was also joined by SMC Deputy Secretary cum SMC Enforcement Officer Irman Tajuddin Edy and other councillors.

“This inspection was done so that we could determine a place for the local farmers to sell their produce at night. The council will prepare this space (parking lot located outside Sandakan Central Market) and allow farmers to sell their produce from 9pm until 5am. We will prepare a designated lot for them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Peter Hii also inspected the jetty that is used for transferring fish, after receiving several complaints from fishmongers on problems they face in the market and on the jetty.

“I have taken note of these complaints and I will take these problems to the council meeting for further action to be taken. As for the problem with dim light here, SMC will solve this issue as soon as possible for the comfort of the hawkers,” he said.
