KOTA KINABALU: Diplomacy between Malaysia and other countries, especially within the region, should not have to suffer as a result of provocation and unchecked comments.

Kimanis member of parliament Dato Sri Anifah Aman said those who are not properly informed, with no background (knowledge) of the subject matter should refrain from making comments without considering the consequences of their actions.

Anifah, who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2009 to May 2018, said the world of diplomacy comprised multilateral aspects which require cooperation among countries. Malaysia regards the cooperation highly, especially within the ASEAN region, he said.

“Singapore is one of this country’s allies in defending our stance on multilateral and international issues, as Singapore and Malaysia share some of the same values,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

During his time as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anifah said he had faced several challenges in managing bilateral relations with neighbouring countries.

Despite setbacks, Malaysia had always been able to overcome them calmly and effectively, earning praises of efficiency and diplomatic knowledge, he added.

“This is a result of negotiations and diplomatic efforts behind the scenes by Wisma Putra officers who work tirelessly to bear fruits of success for the country.

“Wisma Putra plays an important role in handling complicated matters in the world of diplomacy. The result of negotiations by officers are brought to the consideration of the Minister of Foreign Affairs before a decision is made by the Prime Minister.

“If a decision is not made, other means would be employed to bring the issue to international courts or tribunals.

These are the values and elements that need to be taken into consideration in forging healthy diplomatic relations. Do not let ego destroy what has been built all this time,” he said.
