MSU largest mudball throwing event is the university’s 35th entry in MBR.

KUALA LUMPUR: Management and Science University (MSU) set a new Malaysian record with its River Revival project on River Revival was a project organised by MSU’s International Medical School (IMS) to support United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in combatting environmental degradation and climate change.

A press statement from the university said that during the Largest Mudball-Throwing Event of River Revival project initiated on Dec 21, 2018,  around a thousand volunteers from MSU’s International Medical School (IMS) and the university’ community threw mudballs into Sungai Damansara.

The 20.75km tributary of Sungai Klang is a heritage river meandering 120km through the state of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur towards the Straits of Malacca.

A half kilometre stretch runs behind the length of MSU Shah Alam campus right up to its Medical Centre (MSUMC) and The Residence students’ accommodation.

Students across all IMS academic programmes came together for a day of cleaning Sungai Damansara and making 178,900 enzymatic mud balls.

A total of 1,851kg fruit peel mixed with brown sugar and water had been fermented in 1,234 five-litre bottles for three months.

Enzymatic mudballs helped by decomposing sludge to produce nutrition that feeds oxygen-increasing phytoplankton.

The consequent rise of oxygen activates oxidative bacteria that further accelerate sludge decomposition.

Zooplankton around the mudballs transforms the sludge into detritus, an organic sediment containing microbes. Microbe activity produces oxygen and carbon dioxide bubbles, floating the detritus.

Fragmented floating detritus may still give a river the polluted look but as they go on breaking down and flowing along the river, they feed the river’s inhabitants.

A river thriving with fish attracts more birds, enriching the river ecosystem.

Volunteers from the Sungai Klang Heritage Club were present to help with Effective Muball (EM) recipe while officials from Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) verified the 178,900 mudballs for The Largest Mudball-Throwing Event.

This 35th entry makes MSU the university with the most MBR entries.

MSU International Medical School (IMS) Bangalore campus is the first offshore medical school awarded a five-year accreditation by Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

MBBS students from IMS Shah Alam campus have the option of transferring to IMS Bangalore campus in their second year.

MSU offers foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate and flexible programmes in Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies, Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering, International Medical School, School of Pharmacy, School of Education and Social Sciences, School of Hospitality and Creative Arts, School of Graduate Studies, Graduate School of Management, and Centre for Fundamental Studies.
