Single mother claims trial to having smuggled goods

MIRI: A single mother was ordered by a magistrate’s court here to be released on RM20,000-bail with one local surety after she denied possession of smuggled goods charge.

The court thus set Feb 12 for case management.

Annie Low Chiew Yeng, 35, from Pujut Corner, was charged according to Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967 and punishable under Section 135 (1) (v) (aa) of the same act.

She could be fined between RM100,000 and RM500,000 or a jail term of between six months and five years on conviction.

Based on the charge sheet, Low allegedly had 1,314 packets of cigarettes of various brands, 449 cans of beer, 25 bottles of liquor and 14 packets of fireworks believed to be goods that have been smuggled and prohibited from being imported under Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2017.

She allegedly committed the offence at 1.45pm on Jan 10 at a premises in Pujut Corner here.

Earlier, prosecuting officer Nasaruddin Shebli from Customs Department applied for a new date for case management after the accused pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.
