Bug-filled milk product will be investigated thoroughly – Chong

KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) has a received a public complaint regarding a renowned powdered milk product which was allegedly contaminated with insects.

Its Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen said he received the complaint from a consumer in Kuala Lumpur.

They exchanged information via phone and Chong then made arrangements with the KPDNHEP office in Kuala Lumpur to take up the complaint and forward it to the Ministry of Health (MOH) for further investigation.

“Basically, anything related to food defects comes under MOH. As KPDNHEP is in charge consumer affairs, we can also take the complaint but forward it to MOH for lab tests. Therefore, we have made arrangement to forward her complaint to MOH.

“We at KPDNHEP are very concerned about quality of food and other items that consumers buy and use everyday. We will provide our service to the best of our ability, and address all consumer complaints.

“There is no boundary of service as what happened today had shown. If anyone bought items not up to mark, contaminated or deemed unfit for consumption, please feel free to contact us and we will try our best to handle the complaint,” he said at a press conference today.

Chong explained that the complainant had bought the powdered milk from a shop in Kuala Lumpur a few days ago at the price of more than RM120.

He was also informed that the product was still six months away from its stated expiry date.

“The complainant had found out, upon opening the packet, that it was filled with some bugs. She had complained to the company but it was not handled well, which was why she approached us,” Chong said.
