KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) has  received a public complaint regarding a brand of milk powder being contaminated by insects.

Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chong Chieng Jen said the complaint came from a woman in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the ministry’s office in Kuala Lumpur would take up the complaint and forward it to the Ministry of Health (MoH) for further investigation.

“Basically anything related to food defects or not up to standard, it is under MoH. As KPDNHEP is in charge of consumer affairs, we can also take the complaint but forward it to MoH for lab tests or any contamination. Therefore, we have made arrangements to forward her complaint to MoH.

“We at KPDNHEP are very concerned about quality of food and also usable items that consumers buy and use every day. We will provide our service to the best of our ability, and address all complaints of consumers,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Chong said the complainant had bought the milk powder, priced at over RM120, from a shop in Kuala Lumpur a few days ago.

According to the label, the product had a shelf life of another six months.

“The complainant had found out, upon opening the packet, that it was filled with some bugs. She had complained to the company but it was not handled well. And which was why she approached us,” added Chong.
