Sibu to host conference on early childhood education

SIBU: The second Sarawak Conference on Inclusive Early Childhood Education will be held at Kingwood hotel here on July 19 to 21.

The first such conference was held in Kuching two years ago.

According to its co-organising chairman Dr Toh Teck Hock, the conference on the theme, “Accept, Accompany and Achieve” is organised by Fu Yuan Kindergarten Sibu in collaboration with 11 other NGOs.

Among the co-organisers are Association for Children with Special Needs Sibu (ACSNS), Association of Registered Early Childhood Educator in Sarawak, Association of Kindergarten Teachers in Sibu, Sarikei and Kapit Divisions, Methodist Care Centre, Methodist Pilley Institute and National Early Childhood Intervention Council.

Others are Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference, Segi University Sibu Clinical Campus, Sibu Autistic Association, Woodlands International School and University College of Technology Sarawak, and supported by Sarawak Convention Bureau.

Speaking at the press conference at Agape Centre yesterday, Dr Toh said there would be 11 international speakers and 32 Malaysian speakers including 11 from among parents.

He welcomed health and education professionals caring for children, early childhood education teachers, social welfare officers, parents of children with special needs, policy makers, ministry officers, community leaders involved in planning and implementing early childhood intervention programmes to participate in the conference.

The participants, he said, would be provided with a whole range of topics divided into plenary, concurrent workshops and interactive sessions, social programmes which include visit to longhouse and local tourist attractions.

“We are targeting 400 participants and at present we have received registration of more than 220 persons including some from United Kingdom, Australia, Bangladesh, Singapore, Switzerland and China,” he said.

He said early birds who register by Jan 31 get special discounted fee.
