KUCHING: A total of 133 people from 32 families have been placed at four flood relief centres here, Lundu and Sematan as of yesterday evening, an increase from the 97 evacuees recorded the previous evening.

A statement from the State Disaster Management Committee said 32 persons from nine households are put up at Kampung Sungai Lumut community hall while 27 members from five families are at Surau Ar-Rahman in Kampung Sungai Batu.

Another 42 from 11 families have been placed at Kampung Paon community hall in Lundu, with 32 others from seven families at SK Sebat Sematan. Civil Defence Force (APM) Sarawak director Mohtar Samad said his personnel have been directed to monitor the situation around Lundu and Sematan to ensure no untoward incidents occur.

He said as of yesterday evening, the flood level was receding in Kampung Sungai Batu, Kampung Sungai Lumut, Kampung Sebat Melayu/ Dayak/ Baru, Kampung Temaga Dayak/Melayu, Kampung Paon, Kampung Sebako, Kampung Judin dan Kampung Serayan Cina.

However, he cautioned that the water level may rise again should there be continuous heavy rain today.

Mohtar also disclosed that APM’s drone unit had been deployed to help monitor the situation at flood-prone areas.

Meanwhile, Opar assemblyman Datuk Ranum Mina and Deputy State Secretary Datu Jaul Samion were among those who visited flood evacuees at Kampung Paon yesterday.
