BINTULU: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has extended its ‘Go Green’ initiative further by donating 40 units of electric bicycles (e-bikes) to students at its campus here.

According to UPM deputy vice chancellor (Students Affairs and Alumni) Prof Mohd Roslan Sulaiman, the e-bikes serve as one of the facilities and services provided under the university’s students affairs division, aimed at promoting a healthy culture to students at the campus.

“This is one of our commitments towards creating an excellent green campus. It is meant to protect and preserve the environment, and at the same time, provide convenience to the students as far as getting around the campus is concerned,” he said at the launch of the two-day ‘Green@UPMKB-E-Bike’ programme at UPM Bintulu Campus’ Dewan Sri Kenyalang on Sunday.

The event gathered some 250 people comprising staff and students of UPM Serdang and UPM Bintulu campuses. Adding on, Mohd Roslan expressed his hope that the E-Bike programme would strengthen the relationship between the Serdang and Bintulu campuses.

Back on promoting the ‘green campus’ lifestyle, he said it is in line with the ‘Go Green’ tagline – ‘Agriculture, Innovation and Life’.

“I would like to appeal to the students to take care of this facility (e-bikes) as their own property, so that it can still be used by the next generation (of students). Many thanks to the organising committee for your efforts and high commitment, as well as your spirit and dedication – they serve as a clear evidence of our concern towards the needs of our students,” he added.

Meanwhile, UPM Bintulu Campus principal and deputy dean of student affairs and alumni Dr Aryaty Alwie expressed her appreciation to the delegates from the Serdang Campus, led by Mohd Roslan, for coming to the campus here for the first time.

“This year, we will have more activities, based on green concept, at our campus. This is our first step for many more to come in the future. This programme will not be a success without the donation of 40 units of e-bikes from UTM Serdang Campus’ students affairs and alumni division. Hopefully, we would get more in the future,” she said.

The ‘Green@UPMKB-E-Bike’ programme concluded yesterday. Among the activities undertaken were the planting of trees around Sri Rajang College, Dewan Sri Kenyalang, the ICT block and the academic complex. There was also ‘plogging’ (picking up trash while jogging) at Tanjung Batu Beach, which involved 100 participants.
