KUCHING: Pengerang Refining and Petrochemical (PRefChem) achieved a significant milestone when it commenced the start-up of its refinery with the firing up of the Complex’s Crude Distillation Unit (CDU).

With a refining capacity of 300,000 barrels of crude per day, the PRefChem refinery will produce a range of refined petroleum products, including gasoline and diesel upon completion, which will also meet Euro 5 fuel specifications.

The refinery will provide feedstock for the integrated petrochemicals complex which has the capacity to produce 3.3 million tonnes per annum.

“From the start, the project has been an unprecedented undertaking for the industry in its scale, complexity and technology. What’s more, we set ourselves to achieve this from ground up within 60 months.

“Today, the refinery has achieved mechanical completion and is now in full commission, marking the beginning of start-ups in subsequent facilities within this integrated development,” said Dr Colin Wong Hee Huing, PRefChem’s chief executive officer in a statement.

“The team overcame extreme challenges to arrive at this incredible milestone delivered on time as promised. We are now one step closer towards commercial operations,” he added.

With the commencement of the start-up, the refinery is expected to be ready for commercial operations by 4Q2019.
