Hii Puong Wei sprints to the gold medal in the Boys C 50m butterfly.

KUCHING: Sukma swimmer Hii Puong Wei stole the limelight as more records tumbled on the second day of the 46th Sarawak Age Group (SAG) Swimming Championship at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, Petra Jaya yesterday.

The 15-year-old student of SMK Batu Lintang, who represented Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (Kotas), was on fire as he splashed to six gold medals and five new meet records.

Puong Wei’s first record of the day was in the Boys A (15-17 years) 200m backstroke where he clocked 2:11.60 against the old time of 2:15.36.

It was followed by 50m breaststroke (30.21s), 100m backstroke (59.59s), 400m individual medley (4:53.81) and 50m butterfly (25.98s).

His teammate Kelly Teo created her second meet record when she won the Girls Group C (11-12 years) backstroke in 2:35.24, slashing 7.27s from the old record.

The other three new records were set by Kristen Chong Siew Yet of Masa in the Girls B (13-14 years) 50m breaststroke (35.97s), Cayden Mineve Chin of Kotas in the Boys E (8 & Under) 100m backstroke (1:34.92) and Shanise Jauwa Joseline of Kasa 2010 in the Girls E (8 & Under) 100m backstroke (1:40.86).

This brought the number of new records to 12 after two days of intense rivalry among the five teams.

Meanwhile, Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (Kotas) stretched their lead in the two-horse race for the overall championship title, accumulating 1,173 points to stay 122.5 points ahead of Kuching Amateur Swimming Association (Kasa) 2010.

The third to fifth positions remained unchanged with Miri Amateur Swimming Association (Masa) having 501 points, Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (Sasa) 178 points and Bintulu Amateur Swimming Association (Basa) with 140 points respectively.

A total of 319 swimmers from five teams are taking part in this ongoing championship aimed at selecting swimmers to represent Sarawak in the National Age Group Swimming Championship

The championship is organised by Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak and hosted by Kasa 2010 with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim is expected to close the event today.
