State JPJ director Mohd Syafiq Anas Abdullah (in grey suit) flags-off a convoy to symbolise the launch of their statewide operations in conjunction with the coming Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration. The operation, which will be carried out from Jan 29 to Feb 12 is aimed at reducing the number of accidents in the state.

KUCHING: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is aiming to bring down the number of road accidents in the state during this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations.

JPJ state director Mohd Syafiq Anas Abdullah said a total of 185 personnel will be on duty throughout the state to conduct patrols as well as stationed at major bus stations namely Kuching Sentral, Sibu bus terminal at Jalan Pahlawan and Miri bus terminal at Jalan Padang Kerbau.

“Our personnel who will be conducting the patrols will be equipped with a GoPro (action camera) to record drivers who have committed an offence. This will also provide us with photo and video evidence of the act,” said Syafiq during a press conference after launching the statewide safety operations at the JPJ headquarters today.

He said the patrols will be conducted at various stretches of roads to catch motorists who have exceeded the speed limit, jumping the red light as well as other offences which could endanger themselves and other road users.

Last year, JPJ in a similar operation issued a total of 1,120 summons and 814 notices for various traffic offences. Eleven vehicles were also seized by the department.

JPJ are also trying to reduce the number of road blocks as it may cause traffic jams.

On another note, JPJ he said will also be carrying out a joint operation with the Royal Malaysia Police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) and AADK on Feb 2 to 3 and Feb 9 to 10 which focuses on motorcyclists.

Among the focus of the operation he said is to catch motorcyclists who are without a valid license, road tax, insurance, helmets which are not within specifications as well as having modifications to their exhaust and tyres.

Meanwhile, the public are also advised to lodge a report to JPJ on any offences that they have spotted.

“Take a photo of the offence and send it to us. Please also include the date, time and location of the offence and where it was committed,” he added.

The public can submit their reports to the JPJ’s Facebook page, Instagram or Twitter accounts for further action by the authority to issue summons or charge the offenders in court.
