MIRI: Miri will be hosting the 4th Sarawak Deaf Community Games (SKOS) to be held from Aug 15 to 19.

According to its organising chairperson Victor Hii, Miri was chosen to host this year’s SKOS during a committee meeting held recently at the Federation of the Miri Division Chinese Association Sarawak Chamber.

It was attended by Sarawak Association for the Deaf Northern Region (SADNR) chairperson Mary Law, Sarawak Deaf Sports Association (SSDeaf) president Albert Wong, Central Region of Sarawak (CRS) coordinator Jacky Ko and Northern Region of Sarawak (NRS) president Abdul Mutalip Rosli at Federation of the Miri Division Chinese Association Sarawak Chamber.

Hii said that this would be the first time for SADNR, NRS and Lions Club of Miri to jointly organised such a massive sports event.

SKOS is held in conjunction with Malaysia Deaf Games (Sopma) and the biennial event will involve deaf athletes from clubs such as South Region of Sarawak (SRS), CRS and NRS.

The athletes will compete in various sports such as futsal, badminton, tenpin bowling, archery, carom, chess and Chinese Chess.

Hii said SKOS is aimed at fostering friendship and interaction among deaf community as a part of the Malaysian society.

“For the record, Sopma is the national-level championship for deaf athletes. They can also compete in Asean Deaf Games, Asian Pacific Deaf Games and Deaflympics for higher level competition,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, Albert Lau Tee Tung from Tung Sports and David Ting from King’s Archery will be sponsoring the badminton and archery events.
